Wyoming joined the Union in 1890 as the 44th state. Wyoming’s population is about 5.6 million. The state capital and largest city is Cheyenne, with a population of 53,011, though the metropolitan area of Cheyenne is home to 81,607 people. Wyoming borders on South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, Utah, Colorado and Idaho.

Wyoming’s primary industries are mining, agriculture and tourism. Agriculturally, the main crops are livestock (beef), sugar beets, hay, wheat, wool and barley. Mining is an important aspect of Wyoming’s economy. Coal, crude oil, natural gas, uranium, coalbed methane and trona are mined there.
The climate in Wyoming is generally semi-arid and continental and it is drier and windier with more extreme temperatures than the rest of the country. Summers are warm with highs around 85 °F, though nights are much cooler, around 50–60 °F. At higher elevations summer highs are cooler, at around 70 °F. Winters are cold and often very cold, though the Chinook winds bring warm spells occasionally.
