Washington joined the Union in 1889 as the 42nd state. Washington's population is about 6,664,195. The state capital is Olympia and its and largest city is Seattle, with a population of 602,000, though the metropolitan area of Seattle is home to 3,407,848 people. Washington borders on Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia.
Washington was named after the first US president, George Washington. Almost 60% of the population lives in and around the Seattle area. The rest of the state consists of rain forests in the western part of the state, the Rocky Mountains in the most of the rest, and semi-deserts in the eastern section.
During World War II, Washington became an important part of war industries, as the Boeing Company made a lot of the country's bombers. Warships were manufactured in ports in Seattle. Many of the country's atomic bombs were made in eastern Washington.
Washington's primary industries are jet aircraft construction, computer software development, biotechnology, electronics, aluminum production, mining, lumber and wood products and tourism. Agriculturally, the main crops are red raspberries, hops, wrinkled seed peas, spearmint oil, cherries, apples, pears, Concord grapes, peppermint oil, carrots, Niagara grapes, lentils, potatoes, apricots, corn, peas, asparagus, prunes, plums, onions, wheat, barley, cranberries and strawberries.
The western part of Washington State has an oceanic climate with mild, foggy and wet weather and a much drier semi-arid climate in the east.
