South Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies and was the founding state of the Confederate states. It joined the Union in 1788 as the 8th state. South Carolina’s population is about 4,561,242. The state capital and largest city is Columbia, with a population of 127,029. South Carolina borders on North Carolina and Georgia.

Even though the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, allowing women the right to vote, was ratified in 1920, South Carolina didn’t ratify it and allow its women to vote until 1969, making it the second last to ratify next to Mississippi.
