Court Records South Carolina

South Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies and was the founding state of the Confederate states. It joined the Union in 1788 as the 8th state. South Carolina’s population is about 4,561,242. The state capital and largest city is Columbia, with a population of  127,029. South Carolina borders on North Carolina and Georgia.

South Carolina’s primary industries are textiles, paper, chemical products, machinery, automotive products and automobiles and tourism. Agriculturally, South Carolina’s main outputs are tobacco, cattle, poultry, dairy products, rice, soybeans and hogs.

South Carolina has mostly a humid subtropical climate, but areas in a higher elevation have less subtropical characteristics than areas near the coast. Summer is hot and humid, with highs in the high 80s and low 90s. Winter temperatures are mild (around40 - 60 °F) on the coast and around 32 - 35 °F inland.

Even though the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, allowing women the right to vote, was ratified in 1920, South Carolina didn’t ratify it and allow its women to vote until 1969, making it the second last to ratify next to Mississippi.
