New Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies and it joined the Union in 1789 as the 12th state. North Carolina’s population is about 9,380,884. The state capital is Raleigh and the largest city is Charlotte, with a population of 687,456. North Carolina borders on Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and South Carolina.
With its rich history and varied geography, North Carolina has a wide range of activities to enjoy. The many beautiful beaches provide swimming, sailing and fishing opportunities, you can ski high up in the mountains, and there are numerous theme parks, museums, theatres and zoos as well.
North Carolina’s primary industries are textiles, electrical equipment, chemicals, paper, pulp and paper products, furniture, finance and technology. Agriculturally, the main crops are eggs, poultry, hogs, tobacco, milk, cattle, nursery stock, sweet potatoes and soybeans.
The climate is quite varied in North Carolina, differing greatly between the coast, the mountains and the interior of the state. On the coast it is mild in winter and moderate in the summer, while in the mountains the summers are warm – in the 80s – and the winters are cool, with temperatures in the teens and 20’s. North Carolina experiences hurricane effects and tropical storms throughout the hurricane season.
