New York joined the Union in 1788 as the 11th state. New York’s population is about 19,541,453. The state capital is Albany and the largest city is New York City, which is also the largest city in the US, with a population of 8,363,710. New York borders on Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Québec and Ontario.
Ellis Island was the primary entrance for immigrants coming to the states in the late1800’s and early 1900’s. It is now part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in the New York Harbor.
The Statue of Liberty was given to the US as a gift from France as a monument to the Centennial of the Declaration of Independence and was dedicated on Oct. 28, 1886.
New York’s primary industries are scientific instruments, printing and publishing, electric equipment, chemical products, machinery and tourism and it is a leading center of banking and finance. Agriculturally, the main crops are dairy products, livestock and cattle, nursery stock, vegetables, cherries, maple syrup, grapes and apples.
New York has a humid continental climate, with long, cold winters and warm summers, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s.
Vital Records (birth, death, divorce or marriage) for the State of New York after 1880 can be obtained at the New York Vital Records Office or from the Registrar of Vital Statistics where the birth, death, divorce or marriage occurred. New York court records and other public records are open to the public as defined in the New York Freedom of Information Law (FOIL).
