Idaho became the 43rd state in 1890. Idaho's population is approximately 1.3 million. The state capital and largest city is Boise, with a population of 205,314.
Idaho is primarily a mountainous state in the Northwest where skiing is a major pastime, as is kayaking and whitewater rafting. There is a ski resort near almost every city.
Idaho's is often called the Gem State because almost every known gem has been found in Idaho and it is one of only two places in the world to have the rare star garnets. Other important resources are potatoes, lentils, beans, sugar beets, barley, wheat, cattle and dairy products.
Idaho's climate is quite varied, with hot summers and cold winters. Idaho is bordered by Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming Montana and British Columbia.
