Arkansas has a varied and changing court system that serves very small rural communities, towns, villages and large cities. Arkansas still had separate circuit courts and chancery courts right up until 2000 when an amendment to the Arkansas Constitution merged those courts and created District courts, more similar to the judicial system in most other states.
The Arkansas Supreme Court is the highest court in the state. It hears appeals from trial courts and also regulates the legal community and supervises all lower courts in the state.
The Arkansas Court of Appeals hears appeals from lower courts, but its decisions are not published as juris prudence, except in exceptional cases.
Arkansas Circuit Courts deal with criminal, civil, domestic, probate and juvenile cases.
Arkansas District Courts hear small civil suits under $5000, misdemeanor charges and small claims court.
Arkansas is the 25th state and was admitted to the Union in 1836. The population is 2.8 million, with the majority of those residents living in the Little Rock area.
Arkansas vital records may be obtained from the Arkansas Vital Statistics Office. This includes birth and death records from 1914 to present, divorce records from 1923 to present and marriage records from 1917 to present. Any earlier records must be requested from the city clerk offices.
